Lauren Yero | 6TH GRADE ELA Support

Education & Experience:

I am a life-long lover of all things books. From the time I was six years old, I knew I wanted to be a writer. I received my BA in English at Davidson College in 2007 and my MA in Literature and Environment from the University of Nevada Reno in 2013. I also published my first book, a novel, in 2023! I have taught at the elementary, middle school, and university levels in Oregon, Nevada, and North Carolina—including teaching in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms at WBNS. I spent a few years away from teaching while my family grew into a family of four, but I’m thrilled to be re-joining Ms. Josey and the WBNS Middle School ELA team this year!

Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching philosophy can be summed with a quote by William Butler Yeats—“Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” I think of teaching as the process of kindling something together with my students—a curiosity, a passion, a question about themselves or about the world. But I would add that it’s not just the lighting of the fire. As a teacher, you have to keep feeding the flame, nurturing it at just the right moments, helping it grow ever more self-sustaining.

Favorite thing about kids:

I love how kids are so authentically themselves!

Favorite thing about WBNS:

My favorite thing about teaching at WBNS is having the freedom to teach in a way that meets each student where they are. I love the care and attention that every teacher and administrator gives toward helping students feel seen and supported and treasured. (I’m also quite partial to Wood Spot 2!)
