Community Lighthouse Project | Community empowerment and preparedness

The Community Lighthouse Project is...

A special project created in response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, hosted under the Madison County Community Learning Centers 501C3 nonprofit organization, physically located at Woodson Branch Nature School, that offers a unique donation-based approach for various community services, including accessiblity to K-8 education programs, after-school and enrichment programs, summer camps, and adult workshops, plus fresh produce, healthy cooked foods, medicines, and event spaces.

By providing quality services through donations and grants, the initiative aims to support and engage the community while fostering a sense of belonging, healing, and empowerment.

Community Learning Centers

are the backbone of their communities. They don’t wait for special assistance, perfect paperwork, or funding to come through first—they step up, do the work that’s needed, and inspire others to join in.

Madison County Community Learning Centers exemplify this spirit. Why? Because Madison County is bold, beautiful, and resilient in the face of adversity. When challenges arise, our community comes together, setting an example for our children and teaching them the importance of community-driven action. We help each other, and we dive right in.

Our most recent challenge occurred when record-breaking floods, landslides, and sinkholes devastated two of our major towns—Marshall and Hot Springs. Spring Creek and the French Broad River swept through, leaving destruction in their wake. Our response? To stand together, support each other, rebuild, and take care of our community.

Our organization focused on caring for the children and fostering healing through helping. We engaged them in the recovery efforts, letting them experience the profound satisfaction that comes from lending a hand. This nurtures their hearts and equips them with the skills and compassion they’ll carry into future leadership roles.

I'd like to respond by saying that the reason we wanted our son to start his educational journey at Woodson Branch Nature School was because it totally vibes with how we live our lives and how we want to continue to educate him. What you all have done by offering the campus to students who have been temporarily displaced, is a very beautiful gesture. As soon as I read about the Lighthouse Project, I was sending it out for support from family and friends! We don't mind considering our tuition this month as "a donation" to all the hard work the staff and teachers put into the Lighthouse program. Our son was just a toddler when Covid started, and we felt lucky to not have to worry about his schooling back then. So what wonderful luck to have him placed at a school that could keep going after the hurricane and offer space to other children. The opportunity scholarship has allowed us to be a part of this giving community!
